Athletics: Rio-bound US Olympian Sandi Morris soared to the highest outdoor pole vault in the world this year when she cleared 4.93 metres at Houston. The mark, during an American Track League meeting, superseded Russian Yelena Isinbayeva’s clearance of 4.90 metres as the best outdoor mark for 2016. Only world outdoor record holder Isinbayeva and American Olympic champion Jenn Suhr have ever jumped higher. Isinbayeva will miss the Games because of the Russian ban on track and field athletes.

Rugby Union: Former All Blacks skills coach Mick Byrne has signed a four-year deal to work with the Wallabies under Michael Cheika, the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) said. Byrne, a former Australian Rules player, worked with the New Zealand team for 11 seasons, helping the All Blacks to back-to-back World Cup titles in 2011 and 2015 before moving back home to Australia at the end of last year.

Tennis: Feliciano Lopez beat Robin Haase 6-4 7-5 to capture the Swiss Open title in Gstaad 10 years after finishing runner-up in the tournament. Top seed Lopez, 34, lost out to Richard Gasquet in the 2006 final but came through against Dutchman Haase in 77 minutes to win his fifth ATP World Tour title. “It’s an amazing feeling, I’ve been waiting 10 years to win this title,” the Spaniard was quoted as saying on atpworldtour.com.
