Borussia Dortmund’s general manager Hans-Joachim Watzke is expecting Mario Goetze to get back to his very best following his return to the Westphalians.

Germany’s World Cup-winning goalscorer lost his way a little in three seasons with Bayern Munich, but Watzke fully expects the 24-year-old to deliver the goods like he did in his first spell for Dortmund when they won back-to-back Bundesliga titles.

“We’re convinced that our coach will get Mario back to the level he was once at,” Watzke told Germany’s Bild newspaper.

“In Munich, Mario started to think a bit too much about his football and that certainly saw some of his natural instinctiveness disappear.”

Watzke is not concerned about the sort of reception Goetze will be given by the Dortmund fans.

He was given a hostile welcome on his first return to the Westfalenstadion after moving to Bayern, with many Dortmund fans feeling betrayed by his decision to move to their arch-rivals.

“Of course we have noticed that some fans are not happy about his return,” Watzke said. “But the majority are happy.

“And Mario is intent on showing what he can do, particularly to his critics.”
