I refer to the letter ‘A thing of the past?’ (The Sunday Times of Malta, July 10). The correspondent who expressed dismay that courtesy is unappreciated should take heart from the following episode:

A woman told off a man for opening a door for her.

He replied: “Madam, I do not do it because you are a woman, but because I am a gentleman.”
