Nico Rosberg has won pole position for the Hungarian grand prix, snatching the top place from team-mate Lewis Hamilton, who needed to slow because of a yellow flag in the dying second of this afternoon's qualifying session.

The session was delayed and interrupted because of heavy rain and a number of crashes, but the track then dried quickly and drivers were able to use their slick tyres for the all important final segment.

The Red Bulls of Ricciardo and Verstappen qualified third and fourth, followed by the Ferrari of Sebastian Vettel and the Toro Rosso of Carlos  Sainz.

McLaren managed to get their two cars into Q3 for the first time in two seasons, with Alonso (who caused the yellow flag with a spin) heading Button.

Hulkenberg in a Force India and Bottas in a Williams completed the top 10.

Tomorrow's race is expected to be on a dry track.

Rosberg leads Hamilton by just one point in the championship standings.
