Boxing: Former British light welterweight champion Des Rea has died at the age of 72. Rea, born in Belfast, became the first man to win the Lonsdale Belt in his weight category when he beat Vic Andreetti in 1968 and also fought for the European title. The closest he got to a world title was when he was beaten in an eliminator by Jose Napoles, of Cuba, in 1968. He shed an interesting light on his career years later when he revealed notorious East End gangsters Ronnie and Reggie Kray may have been involved in the management of some of his fights.

Basketball: Two-time NBA MVP Stephen Curry said the injuries he suffered during the play-offs forced him to pull out of the Rio Olympics, a decision that still does not sit well with him. “I wasn’t too happy with the situation of having to pull out of the Games,” Curry said. “I wish I would be able to play in those. I was looking forward to it.” Curry’s plans were derailed when he hurt his right knee, an ailment he worked through but many believe never truly recovered from.

Tennis: Marin Cilic has split with coach Goran Ivanisevic after three years, the world number 12 has said. “I am no longer working with my coach Goran Ivanisevic,” Cilic, who won the 2014 US Open under the former Wimbledon champion, said. “We started to work together in September 2013 and we had a lot of success. Unfortunately, the road we were sharing on this journey is separating and I wish only the best for Goran in the future.”
