A 37 year-old Canadian-born man from Siggiewi has been charge in connection with the discovery of half a kilo of cannabis grass as well as cannabis plants.

Michael Brandon Calleja, who is unemployed, was charged this afternoon before Magistrate Doreen Clarke and pleaded not guilty. He was denied bail due to an ongoing investigation and fears of tampering of evidence.

Police inspector Frank Anthony Tabone told the court that the man was arrested after a search at his apartment following weeks of observation. He said that the cannabis grass was found in small sachets which indicated that it was due to be sold.

The large plants were found on the roof while a further 13 pots with cannabis seeds were found in a room.

During interrogation Mr Calleja had admitted to trafficking cannabis but would not reveal to whom it was intended. He had confessed to the police of having already sold 750 grams of cannabis.

The court acceded to the prosecution's request to freeze all of the defendant's assets in Malta and abroad.

Lawyer Yana Micallef Stafrace was legal aid.
