A young man has been put on probation for 18 months after admitting to stealing cash and a mobile phone to the detriment of a number of passengers on a Ryanair aircraft.

Shamison Stafrace admitted to having committed the theft on May 15. The value of the haul did not exceed €2,329.

In handing down sentence, Magistrate Doreen Clarke noted the man's early admission and his cooperation with the police. The court also noted comments by a probation officer that community service was not appropriate as the accused had tested positive to prohibited substances.
