Heritage Malta’s forthcoming exhibition, Melita Renascens, Valletta 1566, commemorates the 450th anniversary of the laying of the first stone of Valletta.
Held in collaboration with Malta Libraries, this exhibition is a first in its nature as it explores the various narratives of the different eras and recounts the story of the people of Malta.
From a modern city built to accommodate the Knights of Malta to a contemporary space transformed to host a European Capital of Culture in 2018 and bearing the title of a Unesco World Heritage Site, Valletta is full of wondrous sites.
But the story of Valletta is not only one of knights, buildings and historical happenings – it’s also a story of the people of Malta, Maltese society and the life of all those who in these last 450 years inhabited or walked the streets of the city.
Melita Renascens, Valletta 1566 is split over two venues, the National Library and the Vendome Bastion in the lower part of St Elmo. Both venues offer a part of the story, with a beginning and an end to each, while sharing the same catalogue, design and general concept.
The exhibition opens its doors this Saturday and will remain open for a whole year. For more information on the exhibition and other events organised by Heritage Malta, visit www.heritagemalta.org.
