A young Danish man who was seriously injured in a traffic accident which left a teenage girl dead, took to Facebook to pen a glowing tribute to her soon after regaining consciousness at Mater Dei Hospital.

Omar Lund was a passenger in the car along with 17-year-old Tara Licari, who died when the vehicle, driven by her brother, crashed into a wall on the Regional Road early yesterday.

They had both been on a holiday in Malta.

"I just woke up in the hospital and to my surprise this was not a nightmare. Despite only knowing Tara for 1 year I can without a doubt call her one of my best friends, as she always managed to make me laugh and smile with that bright contagious smile or her seemingly perfect timed puns that always seemed to make everyone smile even if they tried not to," Mr Lund said.

"Trustworthy and understanding are just two of the many many words that can be used to describe who she was as a person, there was never a point in our friendship where I wasn't able to trust you or know that you would be there for me when I needed you the most.

"You were always able to understand what I was going through. And without a doubt you are the greatest person I will ever could have met, and one thing is for sure I will never ever forget you. Love you so much. Rest in peace you beautiful angel."

Ms Licari’s death is the third road fatality this month and the eleventh since the beginning of the year. An analysis of the 10-year period stretching back to 2007 reveals that this year could be the deadliest in the last decade and even surpass the 21 fatalities registered in 2009.

Data published by the National Statistics Office shows that in the first quarter of this year, three drivers and one passenger were killed on the road. Though the rate may not be considered alarming when compared to recent years, a sudden spike in recent weeks means that the number of deaths this year has already reached the total for 2015 and surpassed the number of two years ago.

On July 11, a 27-year-old motorcyclist lost his life in Regional Road, just two days after the tragic death of a father, 40, who was run over in Għadira Bay while crossing the road with his 10 year-old daughter.
