Twitter has permanently deleted the account of an American journalist Milo Yiannopoulos, known for his extreme conservative opinions, after he bombarded Ghostbusters actress with hate speech.
According to Twitter, Yiannopoulos incited his followers to join the online harassment of actress Leslie Jones, which led to his permanent suspension.
Jones started posting the racist comments she got on her own Twitter account on Monday. She was repeatedly compared to a gorilla and her looks were criticised. She even said she received pictures of users’ bare posteriors and humiliating photo edits of her.
“It’s so sad. Most of these comments sound like they are from ignorant children. ‘I’m the source of AIDS?!’ ... You have to hate yourself to put out that type of hate,” she wrote.
“I don’t know how to feel. I’m numb. “
Twitter responded to Jones’ distress by permanently suspending Yiannopoulos’ account, after repeated warnings and multiple temporary suspensions.
“People should be able to express diverse opinions and beliefs on Twitter. But no one deserves to be subjected to targeted abuse online, and our rules prohibit inciting or engaging in the targeted abuse or harassment of others,” Twitter said in a statement provided to Buzzfeed.
Jones has since quit using Twitter.
