Sander Abela writes:

Last week, the death was announced of former St George’s FC centre-half, Joseph Grech.

A clever and sturdy defender, Grech played for the Pioneers at a time when the Saints were going through a grand revival of their fortunes. Grech was one of the main pillars of the fine St George’s team of the 1970s. He could, if he chose to, play in any Maltese first division side of that era.

In 1973, Grech was capped twice by the Malta Amateurs in the UEFA Amateur Tournament against West Germany and England.

During that season, he played for the Amateurs against the visiting Canadian national team.

I would like to express my deep-felt grief for the loss of a sincere friend and a loyal club man. May the Lord give his family strength at this time of great sorrow.
