Parliament this afternoon observed a minute's silence in mourning for the 84 victims of the Nice terrorist attack.

The Prime Minister said that these attacks had generated sadness and anger among all people of good will. It was shocking that victims included children and family who were only celebrating the values of fraternity, freedom and equality.

Dr Muscat remarked that best way to commemorate the victims was to strengthen the resolve in favour of these values.

Dr Muscat said that while countries continued to strengthen their security and intelligence services, one could not stop an attack such as this, where a truck was used. The key was in education and making those involved realise how wrong such actions were.

Mario de Marco, deputy leader of the opposition, said the values which the prime minister had highlighted were relevant now more than ever. Nice, he said, has a large Muslim community which has long co-existed and one could not label people because of the actions of one man. One needed to understand the source of these problems, but not let such acts disrupt ordinary way of life.
