Students are doing badly in their Maltese exams because they don’t read in their mother tongue. There’s no excuse because there is plenty of good Maltese literature.

For the past 15 years I’ve been writing specifically for Maltese teenagers and even wrote ebooks for them, knowing how keen they are on gadgets.

Yet, while my ebooks in English have been doing very well, it’s not the same for those in Maltese.

I agree with Frans Said that also to blame is the broadcasting media. Most of the announcers, commentators and DJs speak very poor Maltese.

We hear howlers every single day even during the news and nobody in authority seems to bother, not to say anything about the poor orthography.
