Mislav Andelkovic will again play for Birkirkara in the coming season after agreeing terms on a new one-year contract, the Premier League club announced yesterday.

“Birkirkara FC completed an-other major signing as Croatian midfielder Mislav Andelkovic, who has established himself as one of the best foreigners on our island during his six-month spell with our club, has signed a fresh one-year contract,” the said in a statement on their website.

Andelkovic, 28, joined Birkirkara during the January’s transfer window, going on to establish himself as one of the most influential figures in Drazen Besek’s team.

The former Hajduk Split player made 15 appearances for Birkir-kara last season, helping the team to finish third in the Premier League while also reaching the semi-finals of the FA Trophy.

While Andelkovic has agreed to renew his acquaintance with the Stripes, fellow Croatia compatriot Goran Mujanovic was given the release, yesterday.

Mujanovic, who also plays in midfield, was another player who joined Birkirkara last winter and went on to make 17 appearances, netting two goals.

“We would like to thank Goran for his service, while we wish him all the best of luck in the future,” the club said.

Andelkovic, however, is unlikely to join the Birkirkara squad travelling to Scotland for the Europa League second qualifying round match against Hearts at Tynecastle on Thursday as his documents were not registered in time at the Malta FA offices.

Last week’s first leg at the Hibs Stadium ended in a goalless draw, leaving Birkirkara still hoping of creating an upset and advance at the expense of the Edinburgh team.

In other transfer news, Ħamrun Spartans are in talks to sign Jean Pierre Mifsud Triganza.

Last season, the veteran striker joined Gozitan champions Għajnsielem from Valletta during the mid-season transfer window and was a key figure in helping his new team win the GFA league.

In the close season, Mifsud Triganza decided to part ways with the Blacks and is currently a free agent and weighing up his options.

Club insiders told Times of Malta that negotiations between the Spartans and Mifsud Triganza are in an advanced stage and the deal could be completed in the coming days.

If Mifsud Triganza seals his move to the Spartans he will become the third signing for the newly-promoted team this summer following the season-long deals for midfielders Luke Sciberras and Daren Falzon. They joined from Balzan and Naxxar Lions, respectively.

Ħamrun coach Steve D’Amato will run the rule over two new foreign players – Colombian defender Luis Vergara and Brazilian midfielder Jorginho.

They arrived during the weekend and will attend their first training session today.

The Spartans play a friendly match against Pembroke Athleta at the Tedesco Stadium, tomorrow.

Vergara is not a new face for Maltese football as last season he was on the books of champions Valletta for the second part of the season.

Elsewhere, Matteo Piciollo gave his chances of joining Trapani a timely boost when notching a brace during a pre-season friendly for the Serie B club, yesterday.

The Floriana striker, on trial with Trapani, scored twice in the opening half against amateur side Val Rendena. Trapani won 10-0.
