Valletta workers and visitors will be able to wash down their lunches with the tunes of some of Malta's best jazz musicians for five days starting from tomorrow.

The Valletta Midday Concerts will begin at 12.30pm on Republic Street, in the shade of the parliament building. The free lunchtime concerts are part of Jazz on the Fringe, as the country gears up for this year's Malta Jazz Festival

Jazz on the Fringe was officially launched this morning at a press conference during which Culture Minister Owen Bonnici, Arts Council Malta executive chairman Albert Marshall and Malta Jazz Festival artistic director Sandro Zerafa addressed the press.

Jazz lovers will also want to keep their diaries free tomorrow evening, with a free 8.30pm performance at Luqa Skyparks' Talbon and Bons by the Rino Cirinnà/Warren Galea Quartet featuring Dean Montanaro and Manuel Pulis.

The Arts Council is also offering a Malta Summer Jazz Camp as part of its Jazz on the Fringe programme. The camp will offer four masterclasses and workshops by jazz scene educators, varying from American grooves to singing and improvisations to learning about the jazz language. A special workshop for saxophone players will also be offered, with classes running at the Johann Strauss School of Music.

The Malta Jazz Festival begins this coming Thursday, with a series of free concerts at Valletta's City Gate entrance and outside the Law Courts. The concerts will begin at 8pm and will include top international performers such as the Cuban artist Harold López-Nussa.

Festival artistic director Sandro Zerafa said, “As in previous years I am proud to present an eclectic programme which embraces both jazz tradition and the genre-defying styles of contemporary jazz.”

The programme includes top world important jazz artists such as Snarky Puppy, Bill Evans, Omer Avital and Marcus Roberts.

The Malta Jazz Festival 2016, organised by Arts Council Malta, is supported by Cyberpass, Malta Tourism Authority, MSV Life and TVM. MIA, together with Valletta 2018 Foundation, is supporting The Jazz on the Fringe
