This year’s European Championship didn’t generate much rivalry among Italy and England fans, as unfortunately both teams didn’t make it past the semi-finals. Foreigners who are not acquainted with Malta’s history easily become puzzled when they experience the Italy-England rivalry here.

But when one considers the close ties between our countries, it’s normal to side with one of them. The majority of our surnames are of Italian and Sicilian origin and Malta is a former British colony. The excellent relations between our countries was and will always bond us together.

Those who don’t like the hooting of horns and waving of flags should remember that there’s always that closeness besides football that makes us celebrate.
