The Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology has launched a programme called Skills Kits whereby people can register to learn various skills at their own pace. Each skill kit comprises 20 contact hours of instruction. Students may register for up to 30 skill kits a year. There are no fees to pay and the only entry requirement is that applicants must have finished compulsory education.

The programme is aimed at people not in employment, education or training who do not have the skills to find employment; mature people who have not been in employment, education or training for a while and would like to prepare to get back into employment; and students who start in further education but drop out without obtaining any formal qualification.

The skills kits are grouped in several strands:

• Creativity and Services strand, encompassing creativity and basic services offered in the community, including hairdressing and beauty, art and design, office skills and web design;

• Lifestyle Science strand, encompassing care for others, for animals and plants, including poultry production, caring for others and sport;

• DIY Engineering Projects strand, focusing on basic technical skills, including basic domestic plumbing, installation of low voltage devices and servicing a motorcycle;

• Integration strand, which is especially designed for foreign students wishing to study or work in Malta. This strand covers basic English and Maltese, and an orientation and familiarisation of the cultures, social practices and basic services offered in Malta.

Other skills kits are grouped in other strands that target particular skills:

• Personal skills, which focus on getting to know oneself, values, being proactive, time management, being critical as well as getting to know oneself through art, music and drama;

• Employability skills, which focus on the basic skills needed for employment, starting from self-presentation, communication, working together, problem solving, customer care and interview skills.

• Functional skills, which include functional English, Maltese and maths.

Interested applicants may apply for skills kits during the upcoming Mcast application week.
