Two men are being detained by the police following a rape claim in St Julian's this morning.

The St Julian's police station was informed around 6.30am that a woman had been abducted in the area of St George's Bay and driven off in a car towards Pembroke.

Thanks to witnesses, the car was identified and the police headed in the direction of Pembroke, where they spotted the vehicle later.

A man was seen walking next to the car in question but upon spotting the police he fled the scene, but was arrested shortly afterwards.

Another man who was seen in the car with the victim was immediately detained.

The 30-year-old Italian woman claimed she had been raped and was taken to hospital for treatment.

The suspects - a 34-year-old Nigerian and a 36-year-old from Burkina Faso - are being detained by the police.

A magisterial inquiry has been opened.
