The Maltese government has urged its nationals to avoid travelling to Turkey at this point in time following the attempted coup.

"Maltese nationals in Turkey should stay inside, exercise caution if in the vicinity of any military or security forces and inform their next of kin to let them know that they are safe. Press should be monitored for updates and indication of areas of conflict," a foreign affairs ministry statement said this morning.

The Ministry for Foreign Affairs has set up a crisis centre which can be contacted on Freephone 8007 2203 (for local calls) and +356 2124 2191 /+356 2204 2200.

Airlines diverted flights en route to Turkey and cancelled departures from Istanbul's Ataturk Airport as a coup attempt unfolded during the night.

With reports of gunfire in the streets, governments all over the world, from the United States to the United Kingdom and Mexico called on their citizens in Turkey to seek shelter and avoid travelling there for the time being.
