While the world number one men’s tennis player, Novak Djokovic, suffered a stunning loss to Sam Querrey while defending his Wimbledon title, news broke that he is planning on starting a vineyard in his native Serbia.
Djokovic has bought five hectares of land in the Serbian Šumadija wine region where he is said to plant vines next spring and eventually even build a winery.
The area is currently abandoned woodland which will require a period of regeneration. However, the land is expected to be ready for production at some point over the next two years.
Apparently, the acquired parcel had been a vineyard site for more than 50 years. It is located outside of the village of Lipovac in the sub-wine region of Oplenac, which is part of the larger region of Šumadija.
Oplenac includes some of Serbia’s best wine producers. International grape varieties planted here include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and even Pinot Noir. In recent years there’s been an increase in plantings of Prokupac, Serbia’s old indigenous red variety which is traditionally trained in the bush method and known for its fleshy rosés.
