There is an adage in the English language - ‘hoist by his own petard’ -  which, I believe, originates from Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

It cannot be more adapt to David Cameron’s recent situation. On June 24, he must have silently reflected Margaret Thatcher’s remark when booted out of office 26 years ago. She then said “it’s a funny old world”. It certainly is in politics.
