Perhaps the time has come for traffic wardens to be given more powers, rather than simply issuing parking tickets. We are all too aware of the many environmental issues that plague our islands, such as litter and rubbish round every corner.

This would, of course, entail extra training in environmental awareness, necessarily rewarded by an increase in salaries for thosecarrying out these extra duties.

After all, these are the very people who are out and about and not sit, pen pushing, behind a desk. Civil enforcement officers would be a more appropriate title for these personnel.

As a footnote, what could be more embarrassing to an island that relies so heavily on tourism than to have details splashed all over the social media of tourist(s) cleaning up our litter-strewn beaches?
