The editorial ‘Maltese language standards’ (June 30) was called for and to the point.Is the present generation receiving proper comprehensive education or is it being inundated with too many subjects without having the time to absorb what they learn. The utter confusion between Maltese and English started many years ago when certain families wanted to be ‘one-up’ and introduced English words in Maltese sentences.

Many of those parents did not have a proper control of any of the two languages with the result that we are now in a complete mess.Pronunciation is also a sore point: dynasty, vase, vineyard, just to mention three words. Worse, if you use the proper pronunciation, the chances are your listeners will not understand you.The broadcasting media seems to be manned by semi-literate announcers and commentators who either through crass ignorance or irresponsible behaviour might feel to be superior by borrowing and misusing foreign words without being aware that in Maltese they can express themselves better. How are these people chosen and monitored?

Politicians should set up an Academy of Maltese on the basis of the Académie française. Having said that, what is Broadcasting Authority there for? If we had an Akkademja tal-Malti, broadcasting media that mislead viewers and listeners could be fined.When I had started in broadcasting, way back in 1947, we had very strict rules.

Since then, the media has gone to the dogs. It will not be easy to rectify what has occurred but we must start without further delay.
