Hollywood celebrities have rushed to back Jennifer Aniston, who this week penned an open letter criticising the media for their scrutiny of female celebrities.

Aniston published a blog, For the Record, on the Huffington Post on Tuesday. She said she is "fed up" with the media's daily body shaming, pregnancy allegations and getting attacked by paparazzi.

"If I am some kind of symbol to some people out there, then clearly I am an example of the lens through which we, as a society, view our mothers, daughters, sisters, wives, female friends and colleagues," she wrote.

"The objectification and scrutiny we put women through is absurd and disturbing. The way I am portrayed by the media is simply a reflection of how we see and portray women in general, measured against some warped standard of beauty."

Melissa McCarthy, Jason Bateman and Olivia Wilde are among the Hollywood stars, who showed their support for Aniston, according to Reuters.

"Everybody needs to stop tearing down women," McCarthy, 45, said on Entertainment Tonight. She declared she was "one hundred thousand billion percent" behind Aniston.

"It's always about the way [women] look -- saying, 'He's very interesting,' 'He’s a good writer,' 'She's looking older than she was last time we saw her,'" McCarthy said.

Actor Justin Theroux, Aniston’s husband, posted a photo of her on Instagram, with a link to the letter. He posted the hashtag #wcw, meaning Woman Crush Wednesday, and wrote, "Here’s just one reason why."

Aniston said she "wanted to participate in a larger conversation" even though she does not use social media. The blog post was “liked” more than 44,000 times on Facebook and got 36,000 shares.
