Female choreography took over Pjazza Teatru Rjal in Valletta yesterday as the ŻfinMalta dance ensemble performed three works for the Malta International Arts Festival.
Tlieta (3) is an evening of three works by three female choreographers and three female composers. The theme revolves around identity, collectively engaging with notions of communication, construction, destruction and resistance.
The role of the female choreographer, set against the tradition of male choreographers in dance, is of particular interest in contemporary discourse. The topic, which in some ways has become a matter of urgency within the global dance industry, highlights the ironically disproportionate visibility of women in dance when it comes to choreography.
ŻfinMalta executed works by emerging choreographer Rachel Calleja, established dance maker Francesca Tranter and internationally-acclaimed dance artist Athanasia Kanellopoulou yesterday.
The trio of female voices was reflected through their individual questions on identity, space, gender and their inherently Mediterranean sensibilities.
The evening also included sound scores by the UK’s Jess Rymer, Maltese Veronique Vella and Greek composer and sound designer Konstantina Polychronopoulou.
