France forward Antoine Griezmann was named player of the tournament yesterday after leading the Euro 2016 hosts to Sunday’s final where they lost to Portugal in extra time.

A 13-man team of technical observers, which included ex-Manchester United managers Alex Ferguson and David Moyes and current England Under-21 boss Gareth Southgate, has selected a team following the conclusion of the tournament in France, which was won for the first time by Portugal on Sunday evening.

The 25-year-old Griezmann was the tournament’s top scorer with six goals – more than any player at one European Championship since Michel Platini hit nine in France’s 1984-winning campaign on home soil.

The Atletico Madrid striker, who also provided two assists, scored both of France’s goals in their 2-0 semi-final win over Germany and winners against Albania in the group stage and Ireland in the Round of 16.

Four Portuguese players and three from Germany were named in the team of the tournament.

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo was joined by Pepe, Raphael Guerreiro and goalkeeper Rui Patricio.

Germany were represented by defenders Joshua Kimmich and Jerome Boateng and midfielder Toni Kroos.

Wales captain Gareth Bale, who inspired his country to a historic semi-final against Portugal and is Ronaldo’s club mate at Real Madrid, was overlooked but team mates Joe Allen and Aaron Ramsey were included.

France’s Dmitri Payet and Griezmann also made the list.

Bale is perhaps the most surprising omission from the line-up, having scored in each of the three group games en route to Wales’ run to the last four in their first major tournament since the 1958 World Cup.

“After quite a bit of deliberation, the observers chose a team that features the best performing players from the best performing teams at UEFA Euro 2016,” said Ferguson.

“We have chosen dominant central defenders; full-backs who can defend and attack; deep lying midfielders who can control the game and dynamic, flexible and creative attackers, all of whom have the ability to create and score goals.

“We believe that the selected XI represents the best of the competition.”
