Year after year, I see the swimmers’ zone at Ramla Bay shrinking. In some portions of the bay, the buoys are less than 50 meters away from the coast. The water is so shallow within this area that it barely reaches one metre in depth.

To add insult to injury, boat owners seem to interpret this distance as their new mooring point. They speed at over 10 knots bordering the swimmers’ zone. This is unacceptable.

In most European countries, all engines are turned off 300 metres from sandy beaches, with the exception of launching lanes if available. No mooring is allowed within this limit. Why is it that in Malta we favour the few boat owners at the expense of thousands of swimmers?

I appreciate that swimmers’ zones are meant to increase safety but they should be enforced properly. You cannot confine the Sunday crowd to 50 metres from the coast. Recently the water was green and smelled horrible and it felt like I was swimming in a cesspit.

I exhort Transport Malta and the Malta Tourism Authority to take action as soon as possible.
