A woman from Bristol was banned from Facebook just because she shares her name with jihadi militant group, ISIS.

Isis Thomas, 27, says she was trying to log on to her Facebook account when she was instructed to change her name.

“I was on Facebook as Isis Worcester, because when I first signed up years ago I didn’t use my real name, which is Isis Thomas, because of where I worked at the time,” she told The Sun.

“I thought it was about the surname, so I just changed it to Isis Thomas. But that didn’t work and I realised they had a problem with me being called Isis.”

Facebook sent a message to Thomas saying Isis was not allowed as it did not comply with the company’s policy. She was asked to send proof of identity to Facebook, which, according to her, she did.

She hasn’t heard from Facebook since and hasn’t been able to access her profile.

Isis’ mother named her daughter after an Egyptian goddess of the moon, sky, magic, motherhood and fertility.

For most of her life people commented on Isis’ pretty and unusual name, but it started changing ever since the extremist militant group declared themselves the Islamic State, often abbreviated as ISIS or IS.

“I have no plans to change my name, though, I love it. I just want Facebook to realise it’s my real name,” Isis said.
