The problem with European countries is not whether one should leave or remain inside the EU. The concept of creating Europe in itself was and still is a marvelous idea. What went wrong was and remains the imposition, over the decades, of the neo-liberal economic model. It was a fatal mistake as the crisis we are in amply shows. Eight years have passed and a solution is not yet in sight.

We are not suffering a recession - we would have solved it by now - but the consequences of this brutal neo-liberalism. The time of ideologies is over, we were told, as if neo-liberalism is not an ideology.

The solution would be a synthesis of socialist and Christian democratic economic principles.

It is up to Europe as a whole to embark on an intelligent discussion, dig deeply in our roots and post-WWII experience and refer to the basic thoughts of our founders.

If any ideology - political or economic - is obsolete, it is radical neo-liberalism.
