The Malta women’s team will contest today’s final of the FIBA Championship for Small States after brushing aside Moldova 90-30 in a one-sided semi-final in Gibraltar yesterday.

Angela Adamoli’s girls were in a class of their own against the Moldovans and they had victory well within their sights by the half-time interval when they raced into a 55-16 lead.

With such a hefty advantage, the Maltese administered their lead in the final two sessions to set up a gold medal showdown with Ireland.

Today, the Maltese will be in search of their third successive triumph in the continental competition after their victories in 2010 and 2012.

The Irish progressed to the final after they beat Andorra 86-45 in the other semi-final played yesterday.

Steffi De Martino was Malta’s leading scorer with 25 points while Ashleigh Vella and Christina Grima potted 10 points each.

In the men’s competition, Malta were also victorious yesterday when they had the better of Wales 63-51 in the positional play-offs in Moldova.

Tevin Falzon was Malta’s leading scorer yesterday when he amassed 19 points while David Bugeja had 14 points.

This afternoon, Andrea Paccarie’s men will face hosts Moldova, who yesterday beat Gibraltar 85-43, in the play-off for 5th and 6th place.
