We are very suddenly in July, and we’re heading into the sweltering side of summer after what was pretty much a non-winter. While the sun, sea and sand attract hardy beachgoers, those more inclined to avoid the heat and water may prefer to stay indoors. Whichever camp you fall in, however, should you want to spend a couple of hours at the movies, KRS Releasing’s schedule for the next three months offers myriad choices for cinema lovers of all leanings.

The cinema season has already started with a bang with the sequel Independence Day, Resurgence currently in cinemas, yet it has some pretty stiff competition in the blockbuster stakes. Pitting angry, ugly, earth-destroying aliens against a little blue tang fish may not seem a good idea, especially since Finding Dory, the Ellen Degeneres-voiced marine heroine is already working hard at destroying box-office records in her wake as she makes her way to our shores.

Also jostling for position for box-office success is the returning Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) in the fifth instalment of the hugely successful franchise titled, simply, Jason Bourne. Add to that the next chapter in the reimagined Star Trek franchise – with Star Trek Beyond – as Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) and his crew embark on the first leg of the USS Enterprise’s five-year mission into uncharted territory. The release of the film will be tinged with sadness by the recent tragic death of 27-year-old Anton Yelchin, who plays Chekov.

The action genre also includes DC’s team of colourful anti-heroes who make their debut in Suicide Squad, Jason Statham returns as contract killer Arthur Bishop in Mechanic – Resurrection and Gerard Butler stars in the fantasy Gods of Egypt.

More action – this time with a comedic bent – can be found in Central Intelligence which sees the unlikely pairing of Dwayne Johnson and comedian Kevin Hart. Jonah Hill and Miles Teller cause havoc as arms dealers in War Dogs, while the remake of the 1984 classic Ghostbusters, featuring a mostly-female cast, including Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig, has some pretty big boots to fill.

In the pure comedy stakes, anticipation is also remarkably high for the big screen outing of Edina (Jennifer Saunders) and Patsy (Joanna Lumley) from TV’s cult comedy Absolutely Fabulous. Renee Zellweger returns in one of her signature roles in Bridget Jones’s Baby and Jesse Eisenberg channels some Woody Allen angst in Café Society. Zac Efron and Adam Devine play the eponymous roles in Mike and Dave need Wedding Dates, Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Christina Applegate are Bad Moms, while Kevin Spacey takes on a rare comic role in Nine Lives in which his character gets stuck in the body of a cat.

This summer season also offers some sterling fare for families and kids of all ages. While Finding Dory is certainly eagerly awaited, the choice is so much vaster than just Pixar’s latest juggernaut. Steven Spielberg tackling Roald Dahl’s The BFG can only offer magical results, while if you ever wondered what your pets get up to while you’re away from home, check out The Secret Life of Pets. Kubo and the Two Strings promises to be a little quirky offering, while the manic menagerie of the Ice Age franchise returns for another instalment in Ice Age: Collision Course.

It’s not all animated fare, however, with a remake of Pete’s Dragon also on the cards. The science-fiction young adult romance The Space Between Us charts the blossoming romance between a young boy born on Mars and a girl on earth he befriends, while Swallows and Amazons is a big-screen adaptation of the children’s adventure books of the same name by Arthur Ransome.

KRS Releasing also has a number of solid dramas on offer. Viggo Mortensen heads a cast of young actors in Captain Fantastic and Mark Wahlberg headlines Deepwater Horizon, which narrates the true story of the 2010 environmental disaster. The Civil War drama Free State of Jones stars Matthew McConaughey.

Keri Russell, Emma Roberts and Dave Franco star in Nerve and Julieta is the latest offering from acclaimed Spanish director Pedro Almodovar.

The popular character Tarzan gets a new outing in The Legend of Tarzan, Blake Lively fights off a shark in The Shallows, while Jesse Eisenberg again leads the returning cast in the illusion-tinged Now you See Me 2.

Ghostbusters is not the only classic movie that is getting an overhaul. Two epics from the later part of Hollywood’s Golden age have been remade – with new versions of Ben Hur (originally 1959) and The Magnificent Seven (1960) also set to hit our screens.

Horror boffins, there is something there for you too, with this week’s release of the critically acclaimed The Conjuring 2 starring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga. Other titles including Don’t Breathe and The Purge – Election Year will follow soon.
