This year’s BOV Marigold Volleyball Marathon, a 53-hour challenge in aid of Id-Dar tal-Providenza, starts today at 6pm at the home’s premises in Siġġiewi, ending on Sunday at 11.55pm.

The aim of the marathon is to raise funds for Id-Dar tal-Providenza, the Church-run home for persons with special needs that also offers respite services to the families of its residents.

Dar tal-Providenza needs over €3 million annually to keep its services going for some 100 people.

“Visitors to the marathon will be treated to a sporting spectacle as well as various forms of entertainment that will certainly appeal to everyone. I urge everyone to support our cause to enhance the quality of life of our residents,” said Fr Martin Micallef, director at Id-Dar tal-Providenza.

“We are banking on the generosity of all those who will be participating, helping or just visiting to give their support to this worthy initiative,” he said.

There are over 200 people, players, organisers and volunteers taking part, all dedicated to make this year’s marathon a success. The money raised will enable Id-Dar tal-Providenza to continue offering individual attention to its residents.

There are four main reasons behind the volleyball marathon, said Fr Micallef:

“The main aim is to raise the much needed funds for Id-Dar tal-Providenza. This is coupled with encouraging society to take part in voluntary work, and the importance of a healthy lifestyle through sport. Last but not least, Id-Dar tal-Providenza uses the BOV volleyball marathon to send the message that persons with disability are to be treated with the utmost respect and to offer them opportunities that are everyone’s right.”
