A 25-year-old man was appointed the “hero of the day” in Germany after he found €150,000 which he then gave to the authorities.

Minden police said he found about €50,000 in cash and saving books that contained more than €100,000, while he was assembling the furniture. The money was hidden under a board.

Police in the German town of Minden said they gave the unidentified man the informal title because while small amounts of cash are regularly handed in to authorities, "such a large sum is the absolute exception".

The man, who arrived in Germany as a refugee last October, discovered the money in a cupboard he had received from a charitable organisation.
