The world’s first “robot lawyer” has overtuned more than 160,000 parking fines, saving users an estimated €3.5 million.

The “lawyer” site called DoNotPay is a free online artificial intelligence that uses chat-based interface to guide users through basic questions to see if an appeal on their parking ticket is possible. DoNotPay was launched 21 months ago and is currently in use in London and New York.

The service was developed by a 19-year-old British university student and self-taught coder Joshua Browder. He created DoNotPay by scanning thousands of legal documents under the guidance of a traffic lawyer.

Browder's legal advice website has won 160,000 of the 250,000 cases it has taken so far.

“I think the people getting parking tickets are the most vulnerable in society. These people aren’t looking to break the law. I think they’re being exploited as a revenue source by the local government,” Browder told VentureBeat.

After the success of London and New York, the site is about to launch in Seattle next.

So far DoNotPay has been used only for appealing parking tickets, but Browder aims to widen the range of legal advice in the future. He intends to use the system to assist people claiming flight delay compensation, help HIV positive people to understand their rights and to guide refugees through foreign legal systems.
