British people still smarting at their country's decision to leave the European Union are using Twitter to vent their frustration at the man who spearheaded the Brexit campaign.

The hashtag #curseBorisJohnson began trending this morning, with people making it clear how they felt about the man hotly tipped to become their next Prime Minister.

Some users hoped the former London mayor's claims about leaving the EU would come back to haunt him.

While others turned to history - both the UK's and Johnson's own - to make their point.

Others got personal ...

... while one man wanted to hit Johnson where it would hurt the most.

The Twitter hashtag comes a couple of months after #curseDavidCameron trended on the social media platform, shortly after the Panama Papers leak revealed ties between Cameron and his father's offshore business.

Johnson is widely considered to be the front-runner in the race to replace David Cameron as Conservative party leader and UK Prime Minister, having led the Leave campaign in the run-up to the Brexit vote.

According to a report published today in the Guardian, Johnson will not call an immediate general election if he is made party leader, as he believes the Brexit vote has given him enough of a mandate to negotiate an EU exit without having to seek reelection.
