The Saqqajja race stand (il-Loġġa tal-Palju) has been restored to its former glory in time for today’s traditional Mnarja horse races. The race stand, consisting of an arched grandstand and two flanking rooms, was built in 1696 to enable the grandmaster of the time to follow the races in comfort. The restored structure, which had for years been the victim of neglect and vandalism, was unveiled yesterday by Culture Minister Owen Bonnici.
