A lawyer has taken legal action against the National Commission for the Promotion of Equality, arguing that its statement in favour of the morning-after pill is "scientifically, factually and legally" incorrect.

Tonio Azzopardi filed a judicial protest against the NCPE following a statement the entity had issued which stated that a lack of access to the morning-after pill raised an issue of discrimination.

Turning towards the Women's Rights Foundation, Dr Azzopardi claimed that the NGO was "intentionally" hiding the fact that life began with conception and that no one had the right to deny humanity to the embryo in the first 15 days of life.

The process of conception, the lawyer continued, was one and was built on a continuum.

He went on to say that the NCPE did not even have the knowledge of what amounted to discrimination, let alone to what amounted to a breach of fundamental human rights.

“Experts in the human rights field consider the right to life as prevailing over every other right,” Dr Azzopardi argued, adding that the concept was so "elementary" that European human rights case law had established the right to life as a supreme right.

He likened the NGO and the commission’s arguments in favour of the pill’s introduction to those made by the pro-abortion lobby, adding that the faulty arguments had led them to "think that nobody was prepared to counter them and fight in favour of human life and defend these so-far voiceless creations".

He therefore reserved the right to defend the interest and rights of voiceless creations against every violation of the right to life.
