A Briton who leapt from a balcony and landed on the awning of a Paceville establishment also landed himself in court after threatening policemen who approached to help him.

The 18-year-old reveller, Callum Ross Chowdhury, was arrested in the early hours of yesterday morning and charged before Magistrate Joe Mifsud with threatening and causing bodily harm to the police, disobeying lawful orders, disturbing public peace, being drunk in public and committing a violation of another person's property.

The teenager, who was in Malta on holiday, leapt from a balcony and tumbled onto the awning below. As the police approached to see whether he needed help, the youth - who was very intoxicated - instead turned attempted to bite one of the officers.

Whilst admitting to the charges this morning, he soberly told the court that he was due to return to the UK on Saturday.

Magistrate Mifsud upbraided him, telling him that he should obey the laws of the country and that he should not drink excessively.

He was sentenced to six months imprisonment suspended for one year and fined €800, which is to be paid in €100 installments over a period of eight months.

Police Inspector Nikolai Sant prosecuted. Legal aid lawyer Victor Bugeja appeared for the accused.
