Rugby Sevens: Spain’s women matched their men by securing the final spot in the field for the inaugural rugby sevens competition at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics by winning the final repechage round in Dublin. The Spaniards reached the final without losing a point then beat Russia 19-12 for a place in the Aug. 6-11 tournament in Brazil along with the hosts, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Britain, United States, France, Japan, Fiji, Kenya and Colombia. Their success emulated that of the Spain men’s team, who stunned Samoa in Monaco last week to clinch the 12th and final spot in Rio.

Rugby Union: New Zealand’s planning for their 2019 Rugby World Cup defence received another boostyesterday when All Blacks prop Joe Moody signed a contract extension until after the tournament in Japan. The 27-year-old loosehead’s original contract was due to expire at the end of this year but he has decided to re-sign with New Zealand Rugby and the Canterbury Crusaders for another three years. The All Blacks began their 2016 international season with a 3-0 sweep over Six Nations runners-up Wales.

Gymastics: Simone Biles recorded her highest score yet to become the first woman in more than 40 years to win four consecutive US women’s gymnastics cham-pionships. The teenager posted a two-day all-around score of 125.000 in St Louis, better than the previous high of 124.100 she recorded a year ago, and matched the four straight titles won by Joan Moore Gnat in 1971-74. The 19-year-old’s score, highlighted by a near perfect score in the vault, was almost four points better than runner-up and twice London Olympic gold medallist Aly Raisman (121.100).

Golf: Tiger Woods gave the strongest indication yet that he might not return to competition this year, saying that he needed to be patient during his recovery from back surgeries. The former world number one has not played on the PGA Tour since undergoing microdiscectomy back surgery last September and, at the age of 40, has decided not to rush his comeback. “I am playing, just I need more time,” tournament host Woods told CBS Sports during Sunday’s final round of the Quicken Loans National in Bethesda, Maryland. “I still need to get stronger, I need to recover faster and that’s going to take time.”
