Roy Hodgson resigned as England manager this evening after his team were knocked out of Euro 2016 in a humiliating defeat to Iceland.

"My contract was always going to be up after this tournament. I would have loved to have stayed on another two years, but now it is time for someone else to take over this group of players," he told a news conference.

Hodgson had held on to the England job after a poor showing at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, but regained credibility after guiding the side through their Euro 2016 qualification round unbeaten.

But a poor performance against Iceland - a footballing minnow making their first appearance at a major tournament - meant that Hodgson's resignation became inevitable.
