Keeper Matt Gilks, 34, believes he can hit the ground running at Rangers after linking up with some familiar faces.

The Scotland international will be reunited with former Burnley team-mate Joey Barton and former international colleagues after signing a two-year contract.

Gilks only made two appearances for Burnley in two seasons but he has been brought in to challenge Wes Foderingham for a first-team place.

Gilks said: “I know quite a few of the players from the Scotland set-up so it’s not like coming in for your first day at school.

“I’m kind of hitting the ground running in that respect so it will make it slightly easier for me.”

Juventus set to opt for Batshuayi

Juventus are set to replace the departing Alvaro Morata with Belgium striker Michy Batshuayi.

Corriere dello Sport said the Italian champions will be paying a transfer fee of €30 million to Marseille for the 22-year-old as Morata will be returning to Real Madrid this summer.

After a series of options were considered, Corriere said Batshuayi emerged as the first choice for Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri.

Batshuayi scored 33 goals in 78 Ligue 1 games for Marseille.

Loyal Tierney

Kieran Tierney revealed he never considered leaving Celtic once despite being linked with the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool, as he celebrated a new five-year contract, yesterday.

The 19-year-old signed the extended deal a few days after new Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers spoke to him about his future.

“I’m delighted to be here at Celtic,” Tierney said.

“For me, my future is only here just now. You get people asking you if you’re staying but I didn’t have much doubt in my mind.”

Tierney made 34 appearances last season and made his Scotland debut against Denmark in March, bypassing the U-21s.

Chelsea’s Baker agrees Arnhem loan

Chelsea have announced that England Under-21 midfielder Lewis Baker is to spend a second season out on loan at Eredivisie side Vitesse Arnhem.

The 21-year-old made 34 appearances for the Dutch outfit last season, scoring five goals – including the club’s goal of the season – and will return as part of Chelsea’s ongoing link with Vitesse.

Baker has yet to feature for the Blues’ first team and has previously spent time out on loan at Sheffield Wednesday and MK Dons.

“There was interest from several other clubs last summer but, together with my family and Chelsea, I have discussed the options and we all believed that another year at Vitesse was the best option,” he said.

Melo on his way back to Turkey

Felipe Melo is likely to complete his career at his former club Galatasaray as reports yesterday suggested that Inter are ready to off-load the veteran after only one year at the San Siro.

Inter signed Brazilian Melo from Galatasaray for almost €4 million in summer of 2015 but he failed to impress and now coach Roberto Mancini is favouring a move away for the 32-year-old central midfielder.

Melo played 26 Serie A matches for Inter last season.

Turkey paper Takvim reported yesterday that a deal between the two clubs could be reached shortly as the player has now revealed his desire to leave Milan.

Galatasaray will be paying a transfer fee of €1.5m for Melo who also played for Fiorentina and Juventus in the Serie A.

Argentine FA is under administration

FIFA has put the crisis-torn Argentine FA under the administration of a committee to put its house in order and prepare it for presidential elections.

The AFA, run as a personal fiefdom by the late Julio Grondona for 35 years until his death in 2014, has since been immersed in a financial and governance crisis.

“This committee will administer the AFA’s daily activities, check its statutes to adapt them to the latest version of FIFA’s Model Statutes and organise elections by June 30, 2017 at the latest,” FIFA said.

Grondona’s successor Luis Segura has automatically ceased to be AFA president until the election of a new chairman and board.

Budimir close to Sampdoria switch

Sampdoria are on the verge of completing the transfer of striker Ante Budimir from Crotone, Sky Sport Italia reported yesterday.

Budimir had been on loan from German club St Pauli but Crotone activated an option to buy the Croatian player for €1 million in the off-season.

Sky Sport Italia said Budimir, 24, will be signing for Sampdoria on a four-year contract but no mention of the transfer fee was made.

Budimir played a key role in Crotone’s surge to the Italian top flight last season, scoring 16 goals in 40 matches in Serie B.
