A project has been launched to train teachers how to create classroom environments that foster equity and inclusion, particularly for children at risk of leaving school early.

The University of Malta’s Centre for Resilience and Socio-Emotional Health is taking part in the new three-year Erasmusplus project, entitled ‘Empathic and supportive teachers – key to quality and efficiency in education’ (EMPAQT). It aims to help teachers to create a learning environment that increases the resilience of disadvantaged young people and gives them skills to construct a positive self-image, set realistic personal goals and develop strategies to achieve well-being.

The project is coordinated by Trakia University, Bulgaria, and includes six other partner institutions. The University is represented by Prof. Carmel Cefai, Prof. Paul Bartolo, Dr Patrick Camilleri and Denise Micallef. Representatives of the partners held a meeting this month in Mugla, Turkey, and will meet in November in Malta.
