Q: I have a query regarding plumbing and electrical works carried out in a private property. Can a consumer legally refuse an offer from a trader to remedy unsatisfactory work done by the same trader? In my particular case, the works are so bad that I do not want the trader to do any more damages.

Can I engage someone else to solve the problems caused by the first trader?

A: When a problem crops up because the service provided was not up to standard, the trader who provided the service is legally responsible to provide a free remedy and fix the problem or damage caused. If you want to claim compensation for the sub-standard work done at your house, you must first give the trader the possibility to put things right.

If the trader refuses or is unable to provide you with an adequate solution, then yes, you may hire someone else to do the works you need.

If the original trader refuses to give you compensation for the inadequate works, you may file a complaint with the Office for Consumer Affairs.
