Food waste in Malta remains the largest contributor to household waste, constituting over half of what we bin. This translates into €1 out of every €5 we spend on food being binned.
A national campaign themed ‘Don’t waste waste’, has never been a more relevant call for us to take action and benefit directly from caring for the environment.
Reducing food waste lowers grocery bills. Planning what to cook also works in favour of changing the way we consume calories and potentially improving our health. Eliminating food waste is not that difficult and is something everyone, from individuals to restaurants, hotels and other establishments, can be a part of.
The national campaign supporting better waste management also supports the drive to reduce food waste. Smart shopping involves planning meals ahead to right size your trolley. Once purchased, one must store food correctly, be aware of the difference between ‘best before’ and ‘use by’ dates and correct portion sizes.
