The Junior Chess Tournament, organised by the Malta Chess Federation, Stella Maris College and 77 Great Estates, took place at Abbracci Café at The Plaza, Sliema.

The event was full and, despite the close proximity to the main shopping thoroughfare, the young chess players remained focused on their boards for five full rounds, each with the aspiration of clinching a number of prizes to be awarded to the best contestant in each age category.

The overall winner was Christian Conti with a perfect 100 per cent score which saw him head off with the 77 tournament trophy, a number of chess books and a free dining voucher for 10 people, including dessert at any The Degree of Sixty outlet.

Second place and the prize for best Under-16 player went to Matthew Fleri. Matteo Stagno took the U-14 prize, with Luke Zammit winning the U-12 prize.

Meanwhile, Matthew's twin brother, Luke, won the U-10 prize and Marcus Loporto nabbed the U-8 award. Category winners were awarded special medals and chess books, and all young participants walked away with a commemorative medal.

The chess tournament highlighted the game's ability to successfully pitch different aged opponents against one another, giving young capable contestants the opportunity to shine. The winner of the U-16 category was only nine years old, beating contestants close to double his age. Although experience is an important factor in chess, the ability to think constructively and to marshal all the pieces is often decisive.
