Manchester City reached the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time in their history but they went down to Real Madrid who went on to win the trophy in Milan.

Rivals Manchester United missed out on qualification to the Champions League and will figure in the less glamorous Europa League after finishing fifth in the English Premier League last season.

Both City and United have appointed new managers with Pep Guardiola now in charge at the Etihad Stadium while Jose Mourinho has taken over from Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford.

The Manchester City owners committed a huge mistake when announcing that Guardiola will replace Manuel Pellegrini midway through the season as the Citizens lost their plot, finishing fourth and gathering 66 points, their lowest total since 2009-10.

United, like their neighbours City, lost a total of 10 league games.

Dutchman Van Gaal wanted his team to dominate possession but his biggest concern was how easily the team fell apart when pressed, and their vulnerability when defending set-pieces.

On a positive note, the FA Cup triumph at Wembley was a nice way to end a disappointing campaign.

The two Manchester clubs claimed the domestic cups, City lifting the League Cup after winning a penalty shoot-out against Liverpool in the final while United beat Crystal Palace 2-1 after extra-time in the FA Cup final.

In the League Cup, United lost to Middlesbrough 1-3 on penalties in round four at Old Trafford while City were knocked out by Chelsea in the FA Cup fifth round.
