Opposition leader Simon Busuttil today extended “a hand of cooperation” to the government to help navigate the UK’s departure from the EU.

Addressing a press conference, Dr Busuttil said he was offering the Nationalist Party's “significant experience” in EU matters.

Brexit could have a number of repercussions on Malta, its economy, and its citizens.

“I want it to be absolutely clear that my priority is to secure the national interest,” he said.

Reacting to comments by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat earlier today, Dr Busuttil said he hoped it was true that the government was prepared to handle Brexit and get the best result for Malta.

Asked if he felt the country was prepared to handle any possible economic turmoil that could come out of the UK’s exit from the EU, Dr Busuttil said a previous PN administration had navigated an economic crisis and this required a strong economic vision as well as good governance.

Dr Busuttil also reacted to Dr Muscat’s comments that it would be suicidal for Malta to consider a departure from the EU. He said he was pleased to note that the Prime Minister, who had argued against EU membership, had changed his tone and now acknowledged the virtue of joining.

“It is undeniable that Malta is strong in the EU and has benefited tremendously,” Dr Busuttil said.
