No women are listed among the world's highest-paid 10 athletes, according to business magazine Forbes.

Only two women made the top 100, with tennis player Serena Williams placing 40th with her €25.5 million income, and Maria Sharapova at 88th place, with an income of €19 million.

Christiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid forward and Portugal national team captain is listed the richest.

Within the last 12 months, Ronaldo has earned more than €77 million.

Barcelona's Lionel Messi comes in second, with an income of nearly €72 million.

Golfer Tiger Woods, who has dominated the top of the list 12 times, suffering from injuries, failed to make it to the top 10 this year. But with his endorsements of nearly €40 million, placing 12th, he's nowhere near a bankruptcy.

Being a player in a popular team sport pays well, as six athletes in the top 10 are team players. According to Forbes, player salaries are getting massive increases across baseball, American football and football, due to massive TV sponsor deals.

The incomes include all salaries and bonuses earned between June 1, 2015 and June 1, 2016, with endorsement income that are an estimate of sponsorship deals, appearance fees and licensing income.
