Stefano Mallia’s piece (‘Brexit: leading, not leaving’, June 14) hit the nail on the head in every paragraph. The British people look at Brexit as an opportunity to restore their sovereignty. Instead, it is an opportunity lost for Britain to show its traditional prowess.
They tied this opportunity purely to immigration concerns. Instead of doing an Aesop’s bone, Britain should have applied more power to take the lead in the EU and control the immigration issue from there.
What they did instead was to withdraw from active participation, missing the wood for the trees. Rather than contributing to unity they preferred to divide.
What the illusive David Cameron should have done is lead Britain and seek leadership in the EU not lead the electorate by their nose to stay in power.
Whether Brexit wins or loses, this blunder will go down in history as the price of populism and ambition. May all of us beware while watching the heavy price for Britain, Cameron and the EU, of course.
