Forty-six Bank of Valletta employees marked World Blood Donors’ Day by donating blood.

“Such activities highlight the bank’s commitment towards the community in which we operate,” said the bank’s head of PR and marketing Charles Azzopardi.

“We organise blood drives regularly. Such events also help induce dialogue among the different stakeholder groups and involve our own people to participate in the community.” He went on to say that over the past few years, the bank had built a good working relationship with the team at the National Blood Transfusion Service and endeavoured to pencil in as many of these events as possible.

Thanking the employees for their keen response, Tony Micallef, practice nurse from the National Blood Transfusion Unit, said the demand for blood was an ongoing one, with its supply depending entirely on volunteers.

“Knowing that one donation can save up to three lives is very powerful and this is the message behind this year’s theme ‘Blood connects us all’.” He also explained that men could donade blood every three months, whiles women could do so every four months.

Statistics show that around 50 bags per day are required to carry out the scheduled surgeries. This means that around 18,000 bags of blood are needed in one year.

The Blood Donation Mobile Unit regularly visits localities around Malta, seeking to ensure an adequate supply of blood. Organisations interested in organising similar activities may contact the Malta National Blood Transfusion Centre on 2123 4767 or 2206 6201 or by e-mail on customercare.nbts@gov.mt.
